Unique FoxTrot features

Dynamic categorization

In order to "zero in" on the documents which really matter, FoxTrot lets you narrow the number of hits by clicking on several categories, which are dynamically generated based on the information and content of found files.

This advanced process, derived from scientific investigation techniques, lets you successively tag hits by file kind, age or parent folder. Dynamic categorization is a unique FoxTrot feature.

Flexible relevance ranking

Typical searches yield too many results: FoxTrot Personal Search's exclusive ranking mechanism weighs each search result, and displays most relevant documents first. If you're overwhelmed by the number of matches, a slider setting will repeat the search with a more discriminating eye.

In-context display of found terms

FoxTrot Personal Search indexes file contents and metadata (file name, author, title and more). Instead of merely showing which files contain your keywords, FoxTrot Personal Search highlights these terms in a preview of the document itself.

You can navigate to next and previous occurences, jump to a particular hit and and select text, all without needing to launch or switch to another application.

FoxTrot displays full PDFs, word processing documents and pictures; it even plays found QuickTime movies, mp3 files and more.

Wildcards, exclusions and more

Searches are performed on full words by default; they can also be made to include:
- words "beginning with" given characters
- all words in a search string
- at least one of the words
- an exact phrase or portion of sentence
- any term except
… as well as complex search patterns combining several criteria.

What was new in FoxTrot Personal 1.5: User-experience and functionality enhancements

+ Modernized the user-interface to use the "unified toolbar" appearance in the search window (which is why 1.5 requires Mac OS X 10.4; earlier versions nevertheless remain available for download)

+ Extended the screen real-estate devoted to displaying search results (hint: customize the toolbar to "Show Text Only, Use Small Size" if you wish to gain even more space)

+ Rearranged the header fields in the preview drawer so as to expand the screen real-estate available for previews

+ E-mail messages from CTM's PowerMail application are now displayed with proper header, indicating the sender, recipient and subject

+ The Services menu now allows additional actions to be performed on the selected found files (previously, the Services menu only applied to text selections only)

+ Spotlight comments (as set in the Finder's info window) are now indexed by FoxTrot (you need to rebuild your index to be able to search for existing comments)

+ Added a View menu which allows zooming in and out of documents containing text, i.e. PDF, HTML, Word, RTF and text. In addition, for PDF documents, the following actions are now available from the View menu
    Display Single Page / Facing Pages
    Continuous / Book Mode / Page Breaks
    Media Box / Crop Box / Bleed Box / Trim Box / Art Box

+ Added the ability to preview the contents of text clippings

+ Added the ability to preview the contents of webloc files (URLs); when previewed, if the webloc file points to a distant webpage, the preview pane will display it dynamically.

+ Added a new preference to choose between the Open and Reveal in Finder actions within the list of found documents

+ The help menu now provides a new "FoxTrot Search Pattern Help" item, a detailed guide of the advanced syntax for the search strings

Relevance ranking enhancements

+ Implemented a new method to improve the relevance ranking usefulness

+ Proximity ranking could over-rate the rank when a single occurrence of a searched word is near multiple occurrences of another searched word.

Searches excluding literal strings and words

+ Searching now supports exclusion of exact phrases

+ Searching now supports excluded words inside quoted strings

Proximity searches

+ Implemented the search for literal strings in a given proximity range

+ You can now also search words in a given proximity range

OR searches of literal strings

+ Implemented the combination of quoted strings (in addition to single words) using an OR operator (using the | character)

Other improvements and changes

+ The scheduled index update could fail to start at the expected time

+ Added the ability to gracefully quit FoxTrot Personal Search during the first-launch indexing progress dialog

+ To distinguish this application from CTM's future FoxTrot Professional Search product, its full name in the Finder and application title bar has been changed to FoxTrot Personal Search
